  1. thanks for this. I know it’s an old post, but our son lives in Madison, and we live south of Pittsburgh. We hate driving through Chicago, and have even taken the southern route through Indianapolis…but it was really long! I’ve talked husband into trying this route. Hope it still works!

    • Thanks for the comment Carol! One time doing the Wisconsin to Pittsburgh drive we followed I-39 south through Rockford all the way to where it intersects with I-80, where we turned East and drove through Joliet and Gary and onward to the East. It adds about 15 minutes but has very little traffic. Another time I drove from Pittsburgh along I-70 to Indianpolis and then I-74 up to Urbana-Champaign, which was also a nice drive.

  2. I am driving from nh to wa this summer. Would you still recommend this route or would you have some updated suggestions. Thank you. -Kathy

    • Hi Kathy, thanks for the comment. We just drove from MN to OH a few weeks ago, and this route still worked well. There’s going to be traffic but it’s always quicker than I-90 on the Chicago Skyway.
